The darkest book in the run by a clear margin.
Percy and Annabeth spend most of it in Tartarus while the other five try to hold everything together above ground. The split structure runs the horror and the adventure in parallel, and the contrast does the work.
It also contains the series’ best character moment, which belongs to Nico, and which is handled with more care than the genre usually bothers with.
