Read in June 2020, along with the other six, in a month where there was not much else to do.

What struck me coming to it late is how small the first book is. A boy finds out he is wanted somewhere, goes to school, and the stakes never really leave the building. The world-building is incidental, delivered through a sweets trolley and a staircase that moves.

It is a school story with a wizard layer, and the series only becomes what people remember once it stops being that.
