A woman with the magazine job, the fiancé and the apartment, built entirely as armour over something that happened to her at fifteen.

The present-day chapters are deliberately unpleasant. She is snobbish and calculating, and the book makes you dislike her before it explains her, which is a risk that pays off.

What it is really about is the gap between what happened and the version she has had to agree to in order to be employable.
