A widower with firm views about parking, recycling and other people’s reversing, interrupted repeatedly in his plans to die by neighbours who need help with something.
The structure is obvious from early on. Alternating chapters fill in the marriage, the reader works out where it is going, and it works anyway.
What stops it being saccharine is that Ove stays difficult. He is not softened into a nicer man, he is just surrounded by people who refuse to be put off.
