A crooked farmhouse in Appalachia, miles from any road, and a family nobody comes to check on. Girls disappear off the highway and the police never knock, which works out well for the Morrows given what is in the yard.
Michael is the son trying to find a way out of what his family does. The book is about how little room he actually has.
It is genuinely nasty and the last act earns that. There is a turn near the end that reframes the whole thing, and I will not spoil it except to say it is the reason people still recommend this one.
Not for everyone. Read October 2023.
