The last of the trilogy, read July 2021 after going back through the first two.
It abandons any pretence of human scale. The timeframe runs to the heat death of the universe, dimensions get reduced as a weapon, and the plot turns on one person repeatedly making the compassionate choice at enormous cost.
Whether that character is a failure of nerve or the entire argument is the thing people disagree about. I read it as the argument. The series has spent three books demonstrating that the universe punishes exactly that instinct.
