Short stories, and the title one is the reason people know the collection. Five survivors kept alive underground by a machine that hates them, with hatred described at a length that makes the point physically uncomfortable.

The rest of the collection is more varied than its reputation suggests, and the anger is the consistent element rather than the science fiction.
