Read for school in May 1989, two years after Hamlet, and the harder of the two by some distance.
An old man divides his kingdom on the basis of who flatters him best, and the play spends five acts removing everything from him, including the capacity to misunderstand what happened.
There is no consolation in it. The ending kills the one person who behaved decently throughout, for no reason the play is willing to supply, and that refusal is the point.
Too much play for seventeen. I understood the words.
