A boy survives a shipwreck in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger, and then at the end offers a second version of events with no animals in it and asks which story you prefer.
The question is the book. Both accounts explain the same facts, neither can be verified, and the people taking the statement choose the better story. It is doing something about faith without ever arguing for it.
The middle stretch is genuinely tedious in places, which I think is intentional and is still tedious.
