The argument is that most modern atheism is Christianity with the theology removed and the eschatology left running. Progress, history bending toward justice, humanity perfecting itself. Take God out and the shape of the story survives.

Seven varieties get laid out, from the new atheists through secular humanism to the kinds the book actually respects, which are the ones making no claim about where history is headed.

It is a cranky book and that is most of its appeal. It is far harder on comfortable secular optimism than on religion.

I do not agree with all of it. It did make me notice how often technology writing, mine included, assumes a direction of travel it never defends.
