The origin story for Clark, and much darker than the Ryan books around it. Two plots run in parallel: a rescue operation in Vietnam, and a man methodically working his way through a Baltimore drug network for private reasons.
The revenge thread is the uncomfortable one. The book is admiring where it should be troubled, and it never quite reckons with what it is endorsing.
Still the best written of the ones I read. April 1995.
