Not a legal thriller. Samuel Sooleymon is seventeen, from South Sudan, and travels to the United States for a basketball tournament. While he is there civil war reaches his family. His father is killed, his sister is missing, and his mother and brothers end up in a refugee camp.

He gets a scholarship to North Carolina Central and the rest is a sports novel, with the family situation running underneath every game.

Grisham is good at procedure, and basketball turns out to suit that. The training, the depth chart, the slow climb off the bench. The ending refuses the obvious sports-movie landing, which I respected.
