Read in November 2023, a month after its sequel, which is backwards and which I would not recommend.
Going in knowing Mitch survives to become a Manhattan partner takes the air out of the central question. What survives that is the structure. A young lawyer takes the offer that is too good, notices the firm is wrong, and spends the back half trying to get out of a trap that closed before the book started.
It is the one everyone points to for a reason. The tension comes from paperwork and billable hours rather than action, and it works.
