The trilogy lands better than book two suggested it would.
The question the series has been circling is whether any of the experiments were ever justified, and nobody much gets let off the hook. There is no clean answer and the cost is real.
Where it strains is the plotting. Several late turns depend on characters withholding things for no reason beyond the book needing them withheld.
