This is the one most readers call the weak point and I would not argue with them.
The maze is gone, replaced by a trek across a burned out landscape, and the structure loosens along with it. Book one had one clear question. This substitutes a run of escalating ordeals without the same spine holding them together.
The world gets bigger and less interesting at the same time.
