Thomas wakes up in a lift with no memory beyond his own name and is delivered into a walled glade full of teenage boys who have been stuck there for two years. Outside the walls is a maze that rearranges itself every night.

The premise is the whole engine. Information gets withheld aggressively and the book works because the reader is exactly as lost as Thomas is. The invented slang gets grating.

What it does well is the dread of a system built by someone, for reasons nobody inside it can see.
