Eleven hundred pages cutting between seven children in 1958 and the same seven as adults in 1985, most of whom have forgotten why they came back.

The monster is the least interesting thing in it. What the book is actually about is that the adults in Derry are worse than the thing in the drains, and that the town has an arrangement with it.

There is a scene near the end that should not be in the book and that nobody defends. It is worth knowing about going in.

Read April 1999, more than a decade after the first run through his work.
